About Family Worship Center FWC History
Kings Mountain Church of God (now Family Worship Center) was first organized in 1937 by Reverend Sam Cope. After Pastor Cope moved on to another assignment, the church was disbanded in 1940. Pastor Cope returned in 1941 to revive the work. The task was formidable for this pioneer preacher, he had to walk from nearby Gastonia and though he never allowed his church work to cause his secular job to suffer, in time he lost his secular job. He sold some hogs to help the church progress through financial stress.
Charter member Doris Short recalled walking to a prayer place on Chestnut Ridge where she and a few others would pray and build a rock altar. Times were hard for the fledgling little flock. No one would sell them land to build a permanent building. After several location changes, a local furniture store owner Mr. McGinnis, bought land and allowed the church to purchase the land from him. The church was established on Parker Street where it continued until 1992.
The church grew, accompanied by the miraculous power of God. During the construction of the church, they ran out of nails and had no money to purchase them. So the members prayed and God sent someone along with the nails. Many saints have sacrificed and labored tirelessly for the success of this church. Many of them have gone home to their heavenly reward, but make no mistake about it; we stand on the shoulders of their labor today.

Reverend Kenneth Looney had the foresight to lead the purchase of the current thirteen and half acre site we occupy today. Reverend J.E. Allen led the construction of a new sanctuary in 1992 and church was renamed Family Worship Center. A new fellowship hall was constructed in 1993.
In October, 1996 Roger & Margaret Woodard from Los Angeles, California accepted the pastorate of Family Worship Center. The church began to experience growth and a move of the Holy Spirit. Soon the need for a new sanctuary was apparent and in July of 2001 FWC dedicated a new thousand seat sanctuary.
Family Worship Center today is a cosmopolitan congregation characterized by contempory and spirited worship, uncompromising preaching of the gospel, confirmed with power and gifts of the Holy Spirit.
FWC leads the benevolence ministry “Earthen Vessels” that distributes food to area residents who need a helping hand each month. Operating out of two warehouses, this ministry is making a difference in the lives of many area residents.
The international mission arm of Earthen Vessels sends ministry teams to various regions of the world, responding to disasters and supporting orphanages and missionaries in those countries.
The “Voice of Triumph”, which is recorded in FWC sanctuary, is seen in 78 countries of the of the world and several selective markets around the U.S.A.
In October, 2004, Power & Praise became a flood of the Holy Spirit through the congregation and the move of the Holy Spirit continues. The move of the Holy Spirit is characterized by souls saved, sanctified & baptized with Holy Ghost. Many have been healed, delivered and richly blessed. We continue to pursue the presence of God to inhabit our sanctuary and worship. There is much left to do and time is short. Come be a part of what God is doing. And if that isn’t possible, pray that we will not fail to follow the cloud of God’s glory.
